Vermont Transit - Bus Barns Housing Project, Burlington, VT
Project Scope
This mixed use project in the historic Old North End included the complete
renovation of two historic trolley and bus maintenance barns and the construction
of a new 12 unit apartment building. In addition to providing 25 units of affordable
housing, the project included 15,000 s.f. of commercial space for lease - Burlington,
VT.
Design Challenges & Solutions
- The conversion of trolley and bus maintenance garages to contain new affordable
housing units within the restrictions of historic preservation standards.
- The design of a new 12 unit three unit building to work within the existing
site and context.
- Design new fenestration systems to work within both REEP energy and NPS historic
preservation standards.
- A central heating plant provides heat to all three buildings.
- Provide five ADA compliant housing units, and full accessibility to all commercial
space.
What Does An Architect Do? An architect is a trained and licensed professional
with expertise in space planning and building design. To design a building,
many elements must be considered such as planned building function,
behavior of occupants, space use, building materials, site-environment, structural,
mechanical and electrical systems, life safety and fire codes, bidding
and construction methods, budget requirements and aesthetics. The Architect’s
skill is to sort through the many requirements and potential solutions to
find options that best address the client’s needs.
