Essex Town Municpal Offices

Project Scope

Design for new 21,000sf municipal office building on a new site. Program included large public meeting room, interactive lobby, municipal offices, town clerk/vault, storage and provisions for future expansion.

Design Challenges & Solutions

  • 16,000sf of office and meeting space on two floors; 5,000sf of storage in a partial basement
  • Site ties into pedestrian access, nature trails, and bike path
  • Community was divided over site selection and building form
  • Numerous sketches done to investigate appropriate “municipal appearance”
  • Public vs. private spaces defined with circulation
  • Main lobby functions as display area and orientation area for visitors. All offices read onto the lobby.

     

 

What Does An Architect Do? An architect is a trained and licensed professional with expertise in space planning and building design. To design a building, many elements must be considered such as planned building function, behavior of occupants, space use, building materials, site-environment, structural, mechanical and electrical systems, life safety and fire codes, bidding and construction methods, budget requirements and aesthetics. The Architect’s skill is to sort through the many requirements and potential solutions to find options that best address the client’s needs.
